UK Defence Signals a New Era: Cyber, Electronic Warfare and AI Come Under Unified Command

June 3, 2025by PAPR-admin

In a landmark move that reflects the rapidly evolving nature of modern warfare, the UK government has announced plans to unify its cyber and electronic warfare capabilities under a single military command. Defence Secretary John Healey revealed the upcoming changes as part of the UK’s strategic defence review, set to be published next Monday.

This reorganisation is more than a bureaucratic reshuffle it marks a fundamental shift in how the UK prepares for the threats of tomorrow.

For years, cyber operations, electronic warfare, and information operations have developed in parallel, often siloed across different branches of the military. Unifying them into a single command structure is not just about efficiency; it’s about operational coherence.

In today’s hybrid threat landscape where a single attack might span networks, satellites, and the electromagnetic spectrum defence must be integrated by design.

Equally significant is the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to invest over £1 billion into an AI-driven system designed to manage the tidal wave of data generated across defence systems. From battlefield sensors and intelligence feeds to satellite surveillance and cyber threat monitoring, the volume of information is beyond human capacity to process in real time.

AI is not a luxury it’s a necessity. And the MoD’s move signals a serious intent to become a digitally native force.

This dual-pronged strategy structural reform and AI investment aligns with what many of us working in tech, defence, and security have long argued: the future of national defence hinges on digital mastery and strategic integration.

Next week’s defence review will be one to watch closely. But this early glimpse suggests the UK is not just modernising its forces it’s fundamentally rethinking how power is projected in the digital age.
