Is It Time To Leave Social Media Platform X?

August 23, 2024by Paul0

Not a day goes by that someone asks if one should leave or stay on social media platform X.

We all say we joined Twitter as it was once known, as a place to connect with friends, share experiences, and maybe learn something new along the way.

Over recent times some of us have found that platform X is no longer the friendly, engaging community that some of us signed up for.

Recently, it has become a crucible of toxic tones filled with negativity, churning conflict and rapid hostility. It’s a long way off the digital journey many of us were a far cry away from the space we once hoped for.

In life we are well aware of the rough and tumble of a few negative comments now and again.

We all enjoy a good old occasional heated debate that we could stumble over and choose to easily scroll past.

But as time went on, the tone of the X feed has become increasingly vile, explicit and truly hostile. Plenty of content has helped to amplify the rise of the soccer hooligan now known to some as the extreme right winger.

The content that used to make me smile, skateboarding cats, updates from pals, interesting articles from noted journalists have been drowned out by massive chunks of negativity. Some of this is a cocktail of disinformation and misinformation.

It seemed like every post, no matter how innocuous, is met with arguments, criticism, and a general sense of nastiness. Some of this generated nasty stuff is believed to be from bot farms, bad actors and Nation-State Threat Actors.

Many clients talk about the negative impact the unbearable echo chamber of social media has on them and their business.

We believe X platform’s algorithms are cleverly designed to show users more of what they engage with, which makes great business sense.

However, it also means that your feed can be increasingly filled with content that could reinforce viewpoints that can be understood to be extreme ones.

Many users feel they are no longer allowed to discuss their ideas or share an experience in a constructive manner, instead, they are entrenched in their own bubble, lashing out at anyone who dared to have a different opinion.

Nicely balanced conversations have now been replaced by polarisation/ black-and-white thinking and the platform became a rattle-bag for ideological warfare rather than a space for meaningful dialogue.
